چکیده

This article describes a formal semantics fo r the deontic concepts the concepts of permiss ion and ob l iga t ion — which arises naturally f r o m the representations used in artif icial intelligence systems Instead of treating deontic logic as a branch of modal logic, wi th the standard possible wor lds semantics, we f i rst develop a language for describing actions, and we define the concepts of permission and obligation in terms of these action descriptions. Using our semantic definit ions, we then derive a number of intuitively plausible inferences, and we show generally that the paradoxes which are so frequently associated wi th deontic logic do not arise in our sys tem*

The Logic of Normative Systems

Logical architectures combine several logics into a more complex logical system. In this paper we study logical architectures using input/output operations corresponding to the functionality of logical components. We propose a logic of normative systems, based on an architecture of counts-as conditionals, institutional constraints, obligations and permissions. For counts-as conditionals and ins...

A Logical Architecture of a Normative System

Logical architectures combine several logics into a more complex logical system. In this paper we study a logical architecture using input/output operations corresponding to the functionality of logical components. We illustrate how the architectural approach can be used to develop a logic of a normative system based on logics of counts-as conditionals, institutional constraints, obligations an...

Obligations and Permissions

4 Utterances and statements concerning obligations and permissions are 5 known as deontic expressions. They can present something of a challenge 6 when it comes to formulating their meaning and behaviour. The content 7 of these expressions can appear to support entailment relations similar to 8 those of classical propositions, but such behaviour can sometimes lead to 9 counter-intuitive outcome...

Contract Driven Agents

We propose, as part of an agent architecture, a system where contracts are represented as first-class entities to allow the relationships between agents to be specified and developed separately from their built-in capabilities. The contracts allow the agent’s problem-solving ability to be augmented by the potential of outsourcing tasks and obligations to other agents. The contracts also allow t...

NoA - A Normative Agent Architecture

NoA is an agent architecture that supports the development of agents motivated by norms: obligations, permissions and prohibitions. Obligations motivate a normative agent to act: a motive to achieve a state of affairs or to perform some action. Prohibitions restrict an agent's behaviour, whereas permissions allow an agent to pursue certain activities. To test the architecture, NoA agents arc ap...

An Architecture For Contract-based Communicating Agents

We extend AgentSpeak (L), a belief-desires-intentions architecture, to reason about and plan with contracts between communicating agents. Our architecture is hybrid in the sense that it incorporates both immediate reaction rules and a more complex planning component. We represent contracts as first-class entities to allow the relationships between agents to be specified and developed separately...
